Supa Philly is a legendary band from the Philadelphia area formed from other top groups from the northeastern United States. Some of its members were recording artists on Decca Records (with The Who) and Atlantic Records, and toured the country, performing in concert with such music legends as Bruce Springsteen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, James Taylor, the Monkees, Chambers Brothers and Tim McGraw.
They played in major nightclubs and other venues on the east coast, such as the Penalty Box in Wildwood, NJ (3,500 music lovers per night), Stone Balloon in Newark, Delaware (near Univ. of Delaware), Funnochios in Atlanta, GA (with Lynyrd Skynyrd) , and the Captain’s Garter in Asbury Park, NJ, (with Bruce Springsteen).
In 1979, the band went separate ways, however, they re-formed two more times, in 2014, and again in 2021. Today, the band consists of four original members, David Christopher, Frank McDonnell, Randy Cantor, and Dick Sherwood, plus a great female singer, Michele Ricco.
Randy Cantor has been their keyboard player and songwriter (Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts), who wrote “Look to the Sky” with Frank (Drummer). A song that Frank and Dick Sherwood (Keyboards) co-wrote, “Here Come the Sixers” has been the well-known theme song of the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team for many years.
The current release- “Look to the Sky-Philly Mix” is the third recording based on a UFO sighting that Frank and Dick had in 1978 at 3am on the Atlantic City Expressway. They were driving back to Philly after a November night at the Penalty Box in Wildwood, NJ. A large, black, triangular “aircraft” floated across the highway about 75 yards in front of them. Their car immediately slowed down to a halt. They got out of the car (no one was on the road at that time) and watched it float by, making no sound, and disappearing over the tree-tops on the other side of the highway.
RADIO AIRPLAY reviewed “Look to the Sky-Philly Mix” as follows:
“Stunning arrangement, super compelling…blown away by the vocals…an almost gospel quality…an interesting message of achieving utopia as a result of extra-terrestrial intervention…triumphant air of grandeur that’s sorely missing in most of contemporary pop/rock today” April 29, 2022.
The “gospel quality” mentioned in the above review was created thanks to the talent of legendary R&B artists Charlene Holloway, Paula Holloway and Annette Hardemann, who were backing vocalists for such legends as Patti LaBelle, Teddy Pendergrass and Lou Rawls.
Who says 60+ year old musicians are washed up? They actually play their instruments and sing without auto-tune!! AND- 45 MORE ORIGINALS COMING!!
